Fathers and their children

“…they had not obeyed my rules, but had rejected my statutes and profaned my Sabbaths, and their eyes were set on their fathers’ idols” (Ezekiel 20:24).

It is one thing to reject God, but it is another to lead others into rejecting him. God’s controversy with Israel was not just over the sins of the present, but the fact that previous generations had set such a bad example, and had pushed God to the limits of relevance. It is easy for children to set their eyes on their fathers’ idols: it is not so easy to win them over to the true God.
